Spectrum Brands Ordered To Pay $1.6 Million Penalty For Failure To Report Coffee Carafe Defect To CPSC

Judge William M. Conley of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin ordered consumer products distributor Spectrum Brands Inc. to pay $1.9 million in civil penalties for failing timely to inform the Consumer Product Safety Commission of customer reports about handles on Black & Decker SpaceMaker coffee carafes that suddenly broke or separated from carafes of hot coffee, and for continuing to distribute the carafes following a recall.
