Skin Cancer: There’s an App for That?

The FTC settled a deceptive advertising suit against marketers who advertised that two smartphone apps, MelApp and Mole Detective, could detect users’ melanoma.  The settlement prevents the marketers from claiming that the apps can detect or diagnose melanoma, and requires the companies to substantiate claims that the apps can increase users’ chances of detecting melanoma in the early stages with “competent and reliable scientific evidence” that “shall consist of human clinical testing.” [2/26/15]
