Here’s something to “like”: companies faced with product recalls are almost universally using social media such as Facebook and Twitter as a means of directly and quickly reaching stakeholders with related notifications and alerts.  Social media benefits in the recall context include timely, effective disclosure; reduction of incidents; and minimization of negative publicity.  Pitfalls center on the fact that social media involves a wider audience and encourages individual consumer commentary.  Companies in today’s internet-driven world may nevertheless find it necessary to use social media in their own recall management decisions.
