NHTSA Warns of Black Market Replacements for Takata Air Bags

At an October 22 briefing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that it had learned of a growing online black market, available on sites including eBay, for unauthorized and possibly dangerous replacements for Takata Corp.’s recalled air bags. The head of NHTSA’s recall management division, Jennifer Timian, warned that airbag replacements “require technical expertise and must be completed by properly trained personnel.” Timian added that, “Under no circumstances should a person purchase an air bag off the Internet, or from a salvage yard or any other unauthorized source.”  NHTSA also said that less than a quarter of affected cars in the United States have been repaired to date.
