Feds Withdraw $562 Million Penalty Request for PG&E

Federal prosecutors, in a one-sentence court filing, withdrew their request to impose $562 million in criminal penalties on Pacific Gas and Electric Co. in connection with a 2010 gas pipeline explosion in San Bruno, California.  The move came during the fourth day of jury deliberations in a trial alleging that PG&E violated safety laws.  The sudden and unexplained decision means that the company faces a maximum of $6 million in criminal penalties.
