FDA Issues Final Rule on New Nutrition Facts Label

FDA Issues Final Rule on New Nutrition Facts Label

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued its final rule updating regulations concerning the “nutrition facts” labels on packaged foods.  The new labels, which must be in place by July 26, 2018, emphasize the total calories per serving; update “serving sizes” to reflect the amounts consumers actually eat; identifying the amount of “added sugars” in the product; and removing “calories from fat” – reflecting current science that the type of fat is more important than the amount of fat – while retaining identification of grams of “total fat,” “saturated fat” and “trans fat.” [5/20/16]
