Canada Approves Simplot GE Potato for Sale Without GE Labeling

Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency have approved J.R. Simplot Company’s genetically engineered “Innate” potato for sale.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration previously approved the Innate potato for sale in the United States, where its packaging includes a website and QR code for consumers to seek more information.  In Canada, the Innate potato — which purportedly is less likely to bruise or turn brown when cut — will not be required to be labeled as genetically-engineered.
